The Graham Norton Show (22-11-2013)

Graham Norton Show - London

Graham is joined by a pair of Time Lords as Matt Smith and David Tennant buddy up on the sofa to chat about the long-awaited Doctor Who 50th anniversary special. Oscar-winner Emma Thompson talks about her new movie Saving Mr Banks, which chronicles the making of Mary Poppins, comedian Jimmy Carr joins in the fun, and the line-up is completed by Robbie Williams, performing I Wanna Be Like You with Olly Murs.

I love Graham Norton, he’s a darling. I always enjoy watching his show when I can. For me, last night was the perfect show ever with one of my favourite actresses, my favourite singer and 2 Doctor(s) Who…

I usually laugh a lot watching GNS, but I have to admit that I’ve never laughed that loud ever. My husband even shushed me!…

I love that red chair …

An Adventure in Space and Time (2013)

AnAdventureInSpace&TimeDaleks

Drama written by Mark Gatiss telling the story of how Doctor Who was first brought to the screen in November 1963.

The BBC’s Head of Drama Sydney Newman puts young producer Verity Lambert in charge of developing his idea for a children’s sci-fi series, and character actor William Hartnell is persuaded to take on the lead role of a mysterious time-traveller known only as ‘the Doctor’.

Starring David Bradley, Brian Cox, Jessica Raine, Sacha Dhawan, Lesley Manville and Claudia Grant.

A beautiful tribute to all the creators of the legendary TV show, especially to the first actor who played the Doctor, William Hartnell. Brilliant !

Here is the behind the scenes :

Doctor Who with William Hartnell (1963)

DrWhoWHartnell

Episode 1 An Unearthly Child Part one : The first story of the sci-fi drama, which was originally aired on November 23, 1963. Two teachers investigating the strange behaviour of a pupil find themselves in a junk yard, where they meet her grandfather and force their way inside a police box – with frightening results.

Episode 2 The Cave of Skulls Part two : Teachers Ian and Barbara are on board the Tardis uninvited, and the Doctor ignores their pleas to be let go. The time-machine takes off back to the Stone Age and the crew make the mistake of venturing outside once they arrive.

Episode 3 The Forest of Fear Part three : The Doctor and the crew leave the Tardis to explore their new surroundings. However, they are soon captured and thrown into a cave with the threat of death – but they are armed with a secret bargaining tool.

Episode 4 The Firemaker Part four : The Doctor and the crew decide the only way to escape being murdered by their Stone Age captors is to show them how to make fire.

*** This very first four-part story that was created fifty years ago presents a Doctor Who not very well defined. I’m a bit disappointed. I’m looking forward to watching the next story with the first appearance of the Daleks.

Sci-fi adventure, starring William Hartnell, Carole Ann Ford, Jacqueline Hill and William Russell.

Doctor Who 50th anniversary

Steven Moffat’s prequel of the 50th anniversary special is titled The Night of The Doctor starring Paul McGann, the 8th Doctor :

Here are the trailers, teaser and clip preview of The Day of The Doctor – only 6 days to wait !

The Day of The Doctor will air on BBC1 on November, 23rd at 7:50 PM.

“I’ve been running all my lives. Through time and space. Every second of every minute of every day for over 900 years. I fought for peace in a universe of war. Now the time has come to face the choices I’ve made in the name of the Doctor.

“Our future depends on one single moment of one impossible day. The day I’ve been running from all my life. The day of the Doctor.”

Doctor Who with David Tennant Part 2 (2007)

DrWhoMarthaJones

Episode 1 Smith and Jones : For Martha Jones, a medical student in Central London, an ordinary day turns into nightmare when her entire hospital is transported to the moon. There, she has to battle the Judoon and outwit a blood-sucking Plasmavore; but can she trust a mysterious stranger called the Doctor?

**** A very smart introduction of this new companion and a great story.

Episode 2 The Shakespeare Code : For Martha’s first trip in the Tardis, the Doctor takes her back in time, to Elizabethan England. When they find William Shakespeare under the control of deadly witch-like creatures, they must battle forces from the dawn of the universe to stop history being changed for ever.

**** A story that would have been a great Halloween special.

Episode 3 Gridlock : The Doctor takes Martha to the planet New earth, in the far future. But when they find the streets being ruled by the sinister Pharamacists, they must brave the ordeal of the mysterious Motorway in order to discover the terrible secret at heart of the city.

***** I loved that story, a very good sequel of  “The End of the World” and “New Earth”.

Episode 4 Daleks in Manhattan Part 1 : The Tardis lands in 1930s New York. In the midst of the Depression, people are disappearing off the streets. Savage Pig Men hide in the sewers and, at the very top the Empire State Building, the Doctor’s oldest enemies are at work, preparing their most audacious plan yet.

Episode 5 Evolution of the Daleks Part 2 : As a new Dalek Empire rises in 1930s New york, Daleks and Pig Slaves attack Hooverville. Martha fights for her life at the top of the Empire State Building, while the Doctor must enter into an unholy alliance with his greatest enemy. The future of both humanity and the Daleks hangs in the balance.

**** I loved the way Dalek Sec was changed after the experiment. And it was a pleasure to see Andrew Garfield in one of his first parts.

Episode 6 The Lazarus Experiment : Martha returns home. Could this be the end of her travels with the Doctor? When she discovers her family is caught up in the scheming of Professor Lazarus and his Genetic Manipulation Device, it becomes a fight for survival, as human DNA twists into monstrous form.

*** I didn’t like the monster : giant scorpion with a human head!

Episode 7  42 : In a distant galaxy, a spaceship hurtles out of control towards a boiling sun with the Doctor and Martha trapped on board. They have only 42 minutes to uncover the saboteurs, but, with a mysterious force starting to possess the ship’s crew, the Doctor is running out of time.

**** I really liked Rose Tyler’s mother, I can’t say that much about Martha’s own mother.

DrWho_HumanNature

Episode 8 Human Nature Part 1 : It’s 1913 in England, and an ordinary schoolteacher called John Smith dreams of adventures in time and space and a mysterious blue box. But when lights in the sky herald the arrival of something strange and terrible, Smith’s maid, Martha, has to convince him that he alone can save the world.

Episode 9 The Family Of Blood Part 2 : War has come a year in advance as the terrifying Family hunt for the Doctor. But while John Smith refuses to accept his destiny as a Time Lord, the women in his life, Martha and Joan, have to take terrible measures to save the whole of history.

*****  A very moving and impossible love story. A beautiful Remembrance Day special. My favourite story for now …

Episode 10 Blink : In an old, abandoned house, the Weeping Angels wait. However, when people start disappearing, a young woman called Sally finds cryptic messages bleeding through from 1969, messages from a mysterious stranger called the Doctor. Can she decipher them before the Angels claim their prize?

***** The very first Doctor Who story I ever saw. I just loved it. One of my friends couldn’t watch it, because she found it too scary! I like the idea of the Weeping Angels, can’t wait to see them again!

Episode 11 Utopia Part 1 : Jack’s back! As Captain Jack storms back into the Doctor’s life, the Tardis is thrown out of control, to the end of the universe. There, they find the savage Futurekind ruling the wilderness, while a lonely Professor tries in vain to save the last of the human race.

Episode 12 The Sound of Drums Part 2 : Harold Saxon becomes Prime Minister, and his reign of terror begins. This is only the start of his ambitions, however, as he announces humankind’s first contact with an alien race, the Toclafane. An audacious plan, spanning the whole of time and space, begins to close around the Earth.

Episode 13 Last of the Timelords Part 3 : Earth has been conquered and the Master rules supreme, with the Doctor a helpless prisoner. The entire human race has been reduced to slavery, as the mighty warships of a new Time Lord Empire rise from the ashes. Only Martha Jones can save the world.

*** You know, John Simm is one of my faves since the Lakes, State of Play and Life on Mars, so I can’t hate the guy!

Time Crash (Children in Need special) : very funny to watch the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison meeting the Tenth, David Tennant.

VoyageoftheDamned

Voyage of the Damned : The waitress Astrid Peth joins the Timelord on a spectacular journey as a space bound replica of RMS Titanic crashes into the Tardis. When disaster strikes, the Doctor uncovers a threat to the whole human race.

**** Kylie Minogue was great as a one-off companion to the Doctor.

Sci-fi adventure, starring David Tennant, Freema Agyeman, Jessica Hynes, Carey Mulligan, Derek Jacobi, John Barrowman, John Simm and Kylie Minogue.

Doctor Who with David Tennant Part 1 (2006)

DrWhoTennantPiper

The Christmas Invasion : It is Christmas, but there is little cause for celebration as planet Earth is invaded by aliens known as the Sycorax. It’s up to Rose and the newly regenerated Doctor to save humanity, with a bit of help from her boyfriend Mickey and her mother Jackie.

Episode 1 New Earth : The Doctor and Rose travel to an alien world in the far future, where mankind has settled after the destruction of Earth. On arrival, they discover a luxury hospital conceals sinister secrets and an old enemy they thought dead is plotting revenge.

Episode 2 Tooth and Claw : The Doctor and Rose travel back to 19th-century Scotland, where they encounter Queen Victoria and discover the sinister plot of an order of warrior monks. Meanwhile, legends of a werewolf prowling the Highlands turn out to be more fact than fiction.

Episode 3 School Reunion : As the Doctor investigates reports of strange creatures haunting a London school, he encounters an old friend and her faithful robot companion. Meanwhile, Rose learns a few harsh truths from her predecessor about travelling with a Time Lord.

Episode 4 The Girl in the Fireplace : The Doctor and his companions arrive on an abandoned spaceship, which allows them to travel back in time to 18th-century France. A little girl the Doctor befriends grows up to be Louis XV’s mistress, and the time lord must discover why she is being pursued all her life by the ship’s sinister clockwork robots.

Episode 5 Rise of the Cybermen Part one : The Tardis is unexpectedly thrown into a parallel universe. While Rose is amazed to learn her father is still alive in this alternative reality, the Doctor discovers a new generation of one of his old enemies, the Cybermen, is poised to take over the world.

Episode 6 The Age of Steel Part two : The Cybermen seize control of London and begin transforming the population into more of their kind. Jackie falls under Lumic’s control, while the Doctor and his companions are forced to go on the run. As the mechanical villains’ power grows, a desperate attack is mounted on the factory at the heart of their schemes.

Episode 7 The Idiot’s Lantern : The Doctor and Rose arrive in 1950s London, just as the nation is preparing to watch the Queen’s Coronation on new TVs – unaware the boxes hold a sinister secret.

Episode 8 The Impossible Planet Part one : The Doctor and Rose are trapped on a desolate planet orbiting a black hole, where they encounter a team of human explorers sent to mine the world’s resources. The research team’s alien servants begin to show a more sinister side to their nature, while far beneath the surface, something monstrous is about to awaken.

Episode 9 The Satan Pit Part two : Rose and the remaining humans are trapped on the base with the possessed Ood, while the planet floats helplessly towards a black hole. Meanwhile, the Doctor is about to discover exactly what “Beast” is trapped in the heart of the impossible planet.

Episode 10 Love and Monsters : An ordinary guy called Elton become obsessed with the Doctor, Rose and their mysterious blue box. But when joins a group of like-minded people, their investigations bring them to the attention of Victor Kennedy, and a harmless hobby is plunged into a living nightmare.

Episode 11 Fear Her : The Doctor and Rose travel to 2012 to see the London Olympics. However, danger lurks nearby in a seemingly normal household, as a mother desperately tries to conceal her daughter’s unearthly powers.

Episode 12 Army of Ghosts Part one : The Doctor and Rose investigate the mysterious Torchwood Tower as ghostly apparitions appear all over the world and head back to their former homes. But before long, a far deadlier threat emerges as an old enemy returns with plans to invade Earth.

Episode 13 Doomsday Part two : The human race is caught in the middle of an interplanetary war, as two of the Doctor’s deadliest enemies – the Daleks and the Cybermen – battle it out on the streets of present-day London. As the Daleks prepare to activate their mysterious secret weapon, the Doctor joins forces with rebels from the Cybermen’s own world to get rid of both alien armies.

DrWhoRunuwayBride

The Runaway Bride : No sooner has the Doctor said a tear-stained farewell to Rose Tyler than he finds himself face to face with a woman in a big white wedding dress. And she’s not in a very good mood. As the Doctor races to get the bride to the church on time, they are pursued by an army of evil Santas, and it soon becomes clear that she is the key to an ancient alien plan. For the first time, Catherine Tate appears as Donna Noble, the Doctor’s future companion in the fourth new series.

Sci-fi adventure, starring David Tennant, Billie Piper, Camille Coduri, Shaun Dingwall and Noel Clarke.

There a great continuity between this second new series and the one with Christopher Eccleston thanks to Rose Tyler’s strong relationship with the Doctor. Billie Piper really moved me in the episodes with her father (Father’s day, Rise of the Cybermen / The Age of Steel) and of course at the end of Doomsday. I will miss her.

Doctor Who with Christopher Eccleston (2005)

DrWhoEccleston

Episode 1 Rose : The Doctor lands on Earth just in time to save department store worker Rose Tyler from a horde of marauding mannequins – plunging the pair into a desperate battle against a malevolent alien intelligence with the ability to bring plastic to life.

Episode 2 The End of the World : The Doctor takes Rose forward in time to witness the destruction of Earth in a solar explosion – but it seems a murderer is stalking the alien delegates who have gathered to watch the event. Guest starring Zoe Wanamaker.

Episode 3 The Unquiet Dead : The dead rise from their graves in Victorian Cardiff and a sinister race of gas-based life-forms is on the loose. Luckily, the Doctor and Rose just happen to be visiting and set out to investigate the nefarious activities of the local undertaker – with a little help from Charles Dickens. Guest starring Simon Callow.

Episode 4 Aliens of London Part one : The Doctor takes Rose back to London – but their trip coincides with another, more dramatic alien arrival as a spaceship plunges into the Thames. In the ensuing panic, the authorities quarantine the capital from the rest of the world – and even Rose’s own home is no refuge from the sinister Slitheen.

Episode 5 World War Three Part two : The Doctor, Rose and Harriet find themselves trapped inside 10 Downing Street, unable to thwart the Slitheen, who deceive the United Nations into thinking Earth is about to suffer an attack from space unless they retaliate soon. As their evil objective is finally revealed, the fate of the world rests in Mickey’s hands.

Episode 6 Dalek : The Doctor investigates the last relic of an alien race held by a billionaire collector beneath the salt plains of Utah – and plunges into a battle against his oldest and deadliest enemies. Guest starring Bruno Langley.

Episode 7 The Long Game:  The Doctor takes Rose and Adam to a space station orbiting Earth in the far future, a time when life on Earth is dominated by the Satellite 5 broadcasting system. However, it is not long before the Time Lord suspects the sinister media organisation is manipulating and controlling the human race to its own ends. Guest starring Simon Pegg and Tamsin Greig.

Episode 8 Father’s Day : The Doctor takes Rose back to the day of her father’s death in 1987, where she changes history by saving his life. A terrifying force is unleashed which tries to repair the damage done to the timeline by destroying the entire human race.

Episode 9 The Empty Child Part one : The Doctor and Rose land in London in 1941, at the height of the Blitz, and discover the city’s homeless children are being terrorised by a ghostly youngster. To add to the mystery, the Army is guarding a peculiar cylinder – and a dashing time-travelling criminal soon threatens the Doctor’s hero status in Rose’s eyes. Guest starring Richard Wilson and John Barrowman.

Episode 10 The Doctor Dances Part two :  As the Child’s plague spreads and London is overrun by an army of zombies, the Doctor and Rose join forces with intergalactic conman Captain Jack in a bid to save the world.

Episode 11 Boom Town : The Doctor visits Cardiff, where he encounters an enemy he thought was dead. It turns out that a scheme to build a new power station conceals an alien plot that threatens to destroy the entire world.

Episode 12 Bad Wolf Part one : The Doctor, Rose and Jack fight for their lives through a series of lethal game shows, little suspecting a more sinister threat is lurking in the shadows – one that could spell the end for the entire human race.

Episode 13 The Parting of the Ways Part two : The Doctor’s friendship with Rose is put to the ultimate test as Earth is plunged into all-out war against the Daleks, forcing him to take desperate measures to save humanity from annihilation.

Sci-fi adventure, starring Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, Camille Coduri and Noel Clarke.

I discovered Doctor Who six months ago with David Tennant in Blink. I fell for that show right away and decided to begin with the first new series. Eccleston is just perfect in that role and I will miss him even if Tennant is my favourite Doctor, well… for now; Peter Capaldi seems quite promising.
